Wanderlust
Our family lived several years as expatriates in Europe when I was a child and the experience of spending family vacations traveling to different countries changed the trajectory of my life. I missed Europe desperately when we repatriated to the United States and from that point on I have lived with a foot in each land - loving both yet never feeling fully at home while away from the other.
All my future education became focused on foreign languages, art, and international affairs. Any time I changed jobs, I negotiated a few extra weeks to travel to another country and sate my wanderlust before moving on to the next adventure.
Not surprisingly, I married a European, and my French husband and I have continued our love of travel and exploration by becoming immersed in foreign lands and cultures. Taking the time to sketch, photograph, and journal while traveling not only creates vivid memories but allows us to reveal new things about ourselves. I find it impossible to travel without feeling that I have finally returned home - if only for a moment.
Traveling Wisdom...
"Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living." - Miriam Beard
"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." - T.S. Eliot
